“C’est assez”sits at the entrance of Sizihwan as a piece of public art, subtly blending into its surroundings. This piece is constituted of three whales in the shape of “人,” or human in Mandarin. Looking from the back, it seems like “入,” the character for “entrance.” This piece serves as a welcoming sign for those visiting this site. When facing the sea, the whales appear dancing on the ocean’s surface. During sunset, these animals stand with the setting sun. From a right angle, you can observe the sun setting into the space surrounded by the whales, as if the whales are swallowing the sun.
Because Sizihwan is right next to Kaohsiung Harbor, the slowing-moving ships on the sea are a familiar scene. Ships are the giants among boats, and their figures echo that of the whales. “The Dance of the Ocean” uses the figures of whales jumping out of the water to symbolize the prosperity of Kaohsiung Harbor.
That is a pure blessing and fantastic dancing.
Pierre Cerviotti traveled across the world while he was young. Many times he witnessed majestic scenes of whales emerging from the ocean. The spectacle was the ballet formed by whales, water, and air between the sky and the horizon. This experience touched him deeply and inspired his works.
However, the life forms that were once so powerful have become fragile nowadays.
The French title of this work is “C'est assez,” meaning “enough.” Whales are threatened by global warming, ocean pollution, and industrial fishing. Cerviotti hopes that creating this piece will allow us to face this natural miracle and stop destroying oceanic environments so that we can praise the dance of the ocean in the future.
